MIBIZ: Autocam Medical Plans New $60M Headquarters and Production Facility

Autocam Medical Devices LLC plans to invest $60 million over the next three years to expand production capacity in West Michigan.

The producer of surgical and medical components and devices expects to build a new 100,000-square-foot global headquarters and production facility at Broadmoor Avenue and 36th Street in Kentwood. Autocam Medical is working Grand Rapids-based AMDG Architects Inc. to design the facility. Pioneer Construction Co., also of Grand Rapids, will handle the build-out.

The company expects the expansion will create an additional 250 jobs. Autocam Medical has already started hiring and expects to increase its recruiting efforts significantly over the next year.

Autocam Medical Building New $60 Million Site in West Michigan

KENTWOOD, MI—(June 2, 2021) — Autocam Medical, a global contract manufacturer of precision, surgical and medical components and devices, announced today that it is investing $60 million through 2024 to expand its manufacturing footprint and capability in West Michigan. This new facility will continue to serve its customers by making products that improve people’s health.

This investment includes a new 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and global headquarters located on Broadmoor and 36th Street in Kentwood, which will house state-of-the-art equipment and technology built to Autocam Medical specifications and proprietary processes. The new plant expansion is expected to create 250 jobs in West Michigan and they’ve already started hiring and expect to increase their hiring efforts significantly over the next year.

Autocam Medical has grown dramatically in West Michigan over the last five years, doubling its revenue and employment in the Kentwood location. The company made the choice to continue expanding in West MI because of the availability of a skilled workforce. Autocam Medical’s President and CEO, John C. Kennedy, cited the availability of highly qualified candidates as a critical factor in the decision to stay in West Michigan. “We decided to locate this new plant in West Michigan because even in a tight labor market, we have been able to find highly qualified team members. The company plans to add skilled machinists, engineers, and technicians. Most of these positions will be hourly, and the company provides training opportunities to all associates. Autocam Medical said it will hire up to 10 young people as part of the city of Grand Rapids’ GRow1000 summer job program.

The Kentwood-based maker of precision, surgical and medical components and devices said Tuesday that it will participate in the GRow1000 Employment Program. First introduced by the city of Grand Rapids in 2020, the summer program aims to provide 1,000 young people with paid work experience.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to help mentor Grand Rapids’ next generation of talent,” said Kristy White, Autocam Medical’s human resource director. “We hope that participants walk away from this experience with the fundamental skills needed to be productive members of the workforce, as well as a greater understanding of the exciting career opportunities that are available right here in Grand Rapids.”

Autocam Medical announced their participation in the GRow1000 Employment Program Wednesday. First introduced by the City of Grand Rapids in 2020, the summer program aims to provide 1,000 young people with paid work experience.

Under GRow1000 Grand Rapids, adults ages 16-24 can receive 120 hours of on-the-job experience and up to $2,000 from June 14 to July 23, Autocam Medical reports.

GRBJ: Autocam Medical Participates in GRow1000 Young Adult Employment Initiative

The city of Grand Rapids announced the launch of the 2021 GRow1000 youth employment program.

Building on employing more than 350 youth last summer, the city and area businesses are poised to employ 650 more Grand Rapids residents ages 15-24 beginning June 14.

GRow1000 will offer young people 120-hour work experiences over six weeks from June 14 through July 23. Youth participants will work 20 hours each week earning $10 an hour for those under 18 and $13 an hour for those 18 and older.

To participate, individuals must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be between 15 and 24 years old as of June 14
  • Live in the city of Grand Rapids
  • Be eligible to work in the U.S.

Grand Rapids Community College and West Michigan Works were awarded the One Workforce Grant and will lead the coalition which includes Autocam Medical, and other area employers, workforce development organizations, educators, and community groups. The program will build a talented workforce to fill existing job openings and will help to prepare West Michigan for the future of manufacturing.

Autocam Medical’s participation in the coalition will help further their commitment to creating a skilled workforce and their CNC Machinist Apprentice Program, in particular.

“Over the past several years Autocam Medical has made a significant investment in building a Department of Labor (DOL) registered CNC Machinist program,” said White. “The grants will allow us to expand upon the strong foundation we have already built.”

The year-round program requires students to complete 728 hours of classroom instruction for 91 weeks. Apprentices are also employed by Autocam Medical and must maintain a full work-schedule during the training period. In addition to CNC Machinist certification, the course of study also covers the necessary schooling required by the State of Michigan for students to receive a certified Journeyman card and puts them on the path to receive an associate’s degree, earning 27 college credits.

“We currently have two classes in place,” said White. “We will be hiring another 14 students to take part in the program in September 2021.”
